Alibag is very populer with the Mumbai's affluent residents. Most of them own farms and bungalows here which are often a few hundred metres from the sea shore. The town and its surrounding villages are the historic hinteland of Bene Israeli Jews. There is a jewish synagogue in the Israel Ali area of the town. Alibag was developed in the 17th century by Maratha naval chief Sarkhel Kanhoji Angre.



Getting to Alibag

Air: : Mumbai – 150Km.

Rail: Alibag is served by the Central Railway. The nearest Central Railway stations are Panvel, 85 km away and Roha, 50 km away.

Boat:There are ferries and catamarans available from the Gateway of India, Bombay. The journey takes 2 hours. However, service is suspended during the rains, i.e. May–October. The ferry takes you to Rewas and you are taken on a bus to Alibag. The cost of the bus trip is usually included in the ferry fare. This is the recommended way of getting to Alibag.

Road: BUS MSRTC buses should be available from various parts of Maharashtra. If you are leaving from Mumbai, then you have an option of boarding MSRTC buses, leaving every 30 mins - 1 hr from the Mumbai Central Bus Station. Though they might be uncomfortable, they top in terms of punctuality. Remember to grab a window seat! Private buses can be chartered - a good option if you are going in a large group.

CAR From Mumbai, one can reach Alibag by going straight on Mumbai–Goa highway till Wadkhal (or Vadkhal) and from Wadkal just go straight, if we take right turn the roads goes to Goa. The distance is approximately 130 km from Mumbai. Take a car or a taxi from Bombay. Alibag is on the way to Goa from Bombay, so you could do the trip as part of a trip down south to Goa. To reach Alibag from Mumbai, take the Mumbai–Goa–Ernakulam National Highway (NH17). At Wadkhal 'naka'(crossing), which is a little 8 km ahead of Pen, continue straight (the left turn keeps you on the highway to Goa), and you are now on the road to Alibag! Alibag is about 22 km from that point!

From Pune, take the Bombay-Pune Expressway and take the Khopoli exit. From there drive towards Pen (30 km), then cross Bombay – Goa highway to proceed towards Alibag. There are autos (shared/individual) available but the best bet is to have your own vehicle as you would like to hop on from one beach to another and you may not get anything in between.

Essential attractions in Alibag

Alibaug Beach:

 

It is the main beach of the town. One can see the Kulaba fort from here (not to be confused with Colaba of Mumbai).

Kihim Beach:

 

Kihim is a secluded place at a distance of 12 km from Alibag. The Kihim beach is famous for dense cover of Coconut trees. It is also famous for woods which are home to rare butterflies, birds and flowers.

It is situated about 16 km away from Alibag

Chaul:

 

Is a historic town situated about 15 km away from Alibag. It is famous for its Portuguese ruins, an old church, a synagogue, Buddhist caves, the Hamam Khana and a temple.

Murud Fort:

Akshi Beach:

 

This is one of the best places to visit in Alibag. It is serene, clean and has a shallow gradient. The sand extends about 100m. It is situated 5 km away from Alibag. A must see... Akshi Beach

Revadanda Beach:

 

Just Before the Vikram Ispat Project is the old town inside the fort. The New Town has developed outside the fort premises. The fort is located on the beach with water on one side and land on 3.

Karmarkar Museum:

 

150 works of art of the famous sculptor Late Mr. Nanasaheb Karmarkar are displayed in his own bungalow. The exhibition is open the whole day, all days of a week and entry fee is Rs.5/- per head. Filming the sculptures on camera is charged Rs. 10/- while video–shooting is charged Rs. 50/-

Kankeshwar Temple:

 

Shiva Temple in Mapgaon village which is 12 Kms from Alibag is situated on top of hill and one needs to mount 750 steps.

Birla Mandir(Salav):

 

A modern architecture built in Marble on a beautiful landscaped hill alongside of Revdanda Creek. With an attractive illumination at night.

Sri Datta Mandir, Chaul:

 

This is another very famous hill shrine. One has to climb around 700 stairs to reach this shrine surrounded by vegetation. Important landmarks are Swami Samartha Muth, Sadhana Kutir, HareRam retiring room, Hare Ram Baba Dhuni Mandir, Audumbar Muth, Mai Jankibai Muth.

Murud Palace:

 

At The Entrance of the city of Murud, is located, the Palace of the erstwhile Nawab of Murud. It was open to public previously, but now the entry is restricted.

Murud Beach:

 

Murud beach is surrounded by three sides by mountains. The water here is clear blue and the sand is slivery white. The sunset from this beach is also fabulous.

Janjira Fort:

 

Murud is famous for the fort of Janjira. The fort is build 2 Kms inside the sea from the Rajpuri bunder. This is one of the vital sea–forts in Maharashtra. The fort is old one but still very strong. Though, today it is not in a proper condition, one can still imagine its hugeness and toughness. Some monuments inside and the walls of the fort are destroyed after so many years now. But the toughness of the fort can be still felt. There are in all 19 Buruj in the fort. Every buruj has huge guns on it especially 3 big guns 'Kalal Bangadi' , 'Chavari' and 'Landa Kasam' are very famous. There are 2 water tanks inside the fort and some tombs as well. The fort, Originally a wodden fortes was built by local fishermen to protect themselves from pirates. It was later was built by Burhankhan–a minister of a Bahaman Sultanate of Ahmednagar but served as the Capital of the Siddis who enjoyed the patronage of the Bahaman sultanate. The Marathas, The Portuguese, The Dutch, The British, all made unsuccessful attempts to capture the fort. It is therefore termed as The Impregnable Fort.

Nearby Destinations

Nagao Beach: It is situated about 7 km away from Alibag and is famous for coconuts and betel nuts. (Famous song “Sagar Kinare Dil ye Pukare” was shot on this beach).some distance away, in Murud town, a fort built by an Abyssinian pirate named Siddhi Johar. Take a sailboat to the fort. It is on an island and built so that there is only one spot where the sailboat can land. Close to this fort is Padmadurg, yet another fort built on an island. Padmadurg was built so as to be able to bombard Murud Janjira.
